I had my truck inspected & they had to replace the Idler arm. Ever since my 4wh H (electronic engage) clicks when I hit the button but will not engage. Also, I have a steep hill to climb traveling home every time I get close to the top my AC center vents go to defrost. I'm not sure if these problems are related but they started at the same time (I also had to have my emergency brake cable replaced for Inspection). I have taken it back to the place that worked on it and they can't find the cause for either problem. I bought an AC control at a junk yard (Grade A) didn't help the AC vent problem. Could it be the round black part that holds the vacuum (mounted to the hood). My plan is to have a trany shop take a look at the 4wh. I really do use it every day to climb my steep gravel driveway. I've had several people ask me what do you need 4wh for this time of year. Thanks, Gary I would check the vacuum hose that feeds the actuator for the front axle. If it is loose or broken, it could cause both symptoms. I had an S-10 that did this. Battery gas had eaten thru the hose. I was on a pass over the Continental Divide in Colorado when I discovered this.

| 75 CJ5 Clutch Linkages Its Me! Its ME! 23:10:21 |
| | I just switched out my 232 for a 258 and noticed that the clutch linkage was severely worn. I have looked at the local auto parts stores as well as the local bone yards, but none of them carry, nor can they order, the parts. I have found one website, collins brothers, that carries the assembly, but would like to get a look at others if at all possible.
If anyone knows where I can find these parts, I would greatly appreciate the info.

I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport that I purchased new and I'm looking to upgrade the brakes. The vehicle has 132,000 miles, but I believe I can get another couple years out of the old gal because she still runs strong. I use my 2005 Grand Cherokee (Rocky Mountain ed) to pull my boat, but my wife "encouraged" me to buy a pop-up camper, so I'd like to use my old XJ to pull it. It's only 2,800 lbs, but my current XJ brakes suck (always have more or less for towing), so I'm looking for any advice on upgrading. Has anyone here done any brake upgrades on their XJ? If so, what have you done? Should I replace the master cylinder, upgrade the rear drums to disc brakes, something else? I have standard size tires on the Jeep and don't plan to upgrade to oversized anytime soon. I'm lost in high weeds and looking for help! Thanks. Kevin papakevin@gmail.com Kevin, This past winter, my '98 XJ needed new rear drums, shoes and wheel cylinders. Rather than replacing them all, I found a wrecked '07 Liberty and pulled the rear discs. Total cost ~$225.
I started at about 8:00AM pulling the old parts, stopped on the way home to have the rotors turned (probably was unnecessary), set to work on my XJ, and could have finished the whole project by that night, except it took me awhile to determine that the newer hard lines had a metric connector, and the originals were standard.
I didn't need to change the proportioning valve. The car stops great, and tracks straight under braking pressure.
Because I used Liberty parts rather than Gr. Cherokee or a Ford Explorer, it was a straight bolt-on, and my stock 15" wheels still fit fine.
I highly reccommend it.
My guide was Eric Zappe's, "High Performance Jeep Cherokee XJ Builder's Guide". Check out http://www.ericsxj.com/
Good luck.

Q: Should I get one?
It's your choice. Read the CAUTION. This is a serious mid-range light utility vehicle. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Mid-range because it's wheel base (120 inches) is longer than a Jeep's [short wheel bases are useful]. It is NOT a heavy duty, high-end vehicle [emphasis]. It's in the same class as pickups. If you need heavy duty (Africa), consider a Unimog.
Most Isuzus are purchased as "urban assault" vehicles. They don't see off highway use. Most never see the use of 4WD. You can call it "sport" or "yuppie," but mine carries the boxes of wine grapes in the field, etc. No question. Mine's been thrashed. Just ask my mechanic. She has a few good words to say about mine. Dumb purchases are based on a fallacy that somehow light utility vehicles are tougher (That "Baby on board" sign is stupid). The high center of gravity makes it easier to roll (one friend has: $8,000 damage).
The next most common group to purchase these vehicles is looking for something to take to the snow and avoid putting chains on. Carry chains. Practice defensive snow/ice driving. A 4WD is not a substitute for good sense, chains, and practice driving in the snow. Know when to turn back, before you need. (Rec.skiing.announce FAQs)
The last group of people (minority) use Isuzus for OHV.
DO NOT ASSUME THAT 4WD, POWER, GEARING, and a lot of METAL WILL GET YOU OUT OF A TIGHT SPOT. More likely it will take you in deeper. You are a fool if your life depends in this technology.
Economy: This is not an economy car. You turn more metal which weighs more which....reduces gas mileage. The metal fatigues and breaks. The serious terrain increases the fatigue. If you are going to buy one: You have decided against buying an economy car.
Always test drive (mine: an 1986 driving to the University of California's White Mountain Research Station, White Mountain, CA, 4K to 12.3K feet with an option to drive to 14K ft. 5 passengers, and all gear [it was a cardiology study, and the cardiologist owned the Trooper], the road is not open to the general public). For me: this was a reasonable test.
Assess: why do you want to buy one? What are your requirements? Ask hard questions, then ask them again.
Mileage: Mine: 1988, no air, no radio, no power windows, 400K miles. For sale, as replacement parts. Replaced: front axle, right hub, head (and gaskets), EPA rating 15 MPG city, 19 MPG highway, your mileage will vary [I have gotten better at times, but 20 is reasonable, my vehicle is NOT used for commuting [I bike to work]]. Oil changed every 5K, air filters every 10K, fuel filters at 30K. Fuel injected, DOHC, electronic ignition. No power windows (yeah, not a yuppie mobile). Have not rolled it yet (I know rollers), but it has hung up. Always have: shovel, snow chains (used several times), AC power converter. Rebuilt engine at 210K miles. Minor repairs: 2 fuses (15 Amp), numerous halogen headlights, some minors dome lights, 1 fusible link, 1 rebuild (210K), 1 partial rebuild around 300K (just gaskets), clutches, brake pads and disks, an a drive shaft with 3 U-joints. My current plan is to replace the Silver Dollar Queen in 2003 with what I am not certain yet. At that time I may relinquish this FAQ. She has been a fine vehicle.

I have a 94 jeep grand cherokee. It gets hot we changed the thermostat and the water pump. It also dies and won t start a few hours. If anyone has an idea please let me know thanks I am currently having this same problem with my '95 GC. I determined(with much assistance from mechanic friends) that the problem is the fan clutch. With mine, it only overheats when I run the A/C because the fan doesn't kick on all the time and the A/C compressor puts out more heat than the engine can handle on its own. I replaced my thermostat first, and it changed nothing(but needed done anyway) and my next thought was the water pump. But...nothing was leaking. So, I hope this helps. Piece of advice, even if you don't plan to work on the jeep yourself, get a Haynes or Chiltons manual, and if you have the means, get a factory service manual (ebay). They come in VERY handy.
