| 1995 525i good for a new driver? Randy MacKenna 00:17:44 |
| | Hi, I was wondering what your opinion of a 1995 525i (automatic) sedan with 97K miles on it would be, for a new driver? Assuming the car checks out okay, is there anything about it that is a problem spot up around this mileage range? Any issues I should be aware of?
Also, I always do my own servicing and repairs on cars I own...in the last 25 years I've never had a car in for repair, anywhere. I never buy new, so I try to buy reliable used cars. Never owned a BMW before, but currently have a 1997 Volvo 850GLT wagon, which has been good to me and is fairly easy to work on. Are these BMW 6-cylinder vehicles generally as reliable, and are they easy to work on? I like having OBDC-II connectivity, but for a 1995 model I don't think I'll get that.
Thanks! -Randy

| E36 BMW 325TDS Auto 1993 Robert G Moore 11:13:53 |
| | Hi, I have the above car and have been running it for nearly 2 years. The only problem I have is a big niggle really, without any warning the fuel gauge goes to empty. This happens even on a full tank!
The tank senders seem to be OK, I was wondering whether this is a well known fault with this model?
Is there a firmware upgrade or an electronic fault that is causing this?
I have run out of diesel a few time because of this and it's really annoying.....

| 2000 323i brake sensor mil light reset? Guest 14:46:33 |
| | Hello there,
I just purchase a very clean '00 323i. There is a mil light indicating that the brake pad sensors is bad. Now having replaced the sensor, I used a diagnostic tool that plugs into the underhood socket to reset, engine service, mil's, read codes etc. It will not, however, reset the pad sensor mil. Any suggestions how to get this light turned off?
thanks, Wrd |

| Cabin Filter Question Jeff 22:30:31 |
| | 2000 E39 here,
I purchased some filters from a seller on eBay.
The purchase was for Bosch filters.
I recived the package today. The box was Bosch but inside were two filters with the brand name micronAir and the part # is BM97130P
Is this the same company as Bosch or did I get ripped?
Please let me know,
Thanks, Jeff

| Fan Clutch E30 11:10:11 |
| | Hello,
Replacing the fan clutch on my 1987 BMW 325. Anything special I should know before I get into it. I don't have to take the radiator out, correct? I know the threading is opposite as well. Do I really need a special tool as well?
Thanks

| Engine Knocking/Valve Tapping on 1996 M3 Niles Moore 17:08:03 |
| | Just bought a 1996 BMW M3 w/ 135,000K miles & a manual trans. No mods have been made to the engine. I have noticed a sound at idle that sounds like the pistons knocking or the valves tapping. It is not extremely loud, but it is noticeable. The frequency of the tapping increases with engine speed. I have heard about issues with the chain tensioner, and also about how some BMWs simply have a 'diesel knocking' sound to them naturally. What do you think this knocking could be?
Thanks, Niles

| 525 TDS difficult to start Nick 17:59:19 |
| | I have a 525TDS which has done approx 130,000 miles and is approx 10 years old. (I believe this engine is also used in the 2.5 ltr diesel Range Rover )
It has become increasingly difficult to start on occasions, which seems time-related to when it was last run. About 3 months ago it was difficult to start in the mornings - more recently it was difficult to start at the end of the day and this week it is difficult to start after an hour of leaving it, when the engine is still warm.
I have fitted a new "lift pump" (on the tank) and fitted new glow plugs (old ones were OK though) - the pump runs for about 45 seconds on ignition switch-on and the glow plugs draw current for their time period when the engine is cold enough to demand glow-plug heating. The engine, once started, runs perfectly when cold or hot at idle and normal running speeds at all revs - fuel consumption is normal - the fuel filter on the bulkhead has been replaced recently.
I do see a large air bubble (about a foot long) appear very readily in the plastic tube from the filter to the injection pump. This is initially pushed towards the injector pump when the ignition is switched on and when the engine eventually starts, quite a bit more air is initially seen rushing along this pipe towards the injector pump, although after a few seconds this disappears as, I presume, diesel takes its place. Once the engine has started, it runs well immediately, cold or hot engine, cold or warm weather.
I feel sure that this air bubble is key to this problem but the main BMW dealer says "they all do that".... I really don't want to go too near the injector pump until I have exhausted every other possibility, but not sure what else I can check. There is no diesel leaking out of anywhere I can find ( no puddles under the car / smells) but somehow air seems to be leaking in.
Can anyone suggest any other areas for me to investigate or is this a classic symptom of something ?
Thanks,
Nick

| 520i temp gauge/overheating? Flummoxed 02:34:01 |
| | Hi - hope someone can help with this. I'm new to this group so apologies if this has come up before, but I couldn't find the same problem described.
I have a 520i (P reg UK) and last night as I was driving home, I noticed the temp gauge go into the red zone (where the red light came on, which is what made me notice). I thought the engine was overheating and was about to stop, but when I took my foot off the accelerator it went back down to 'normal' temp. I wouldn't have expected this if the engine was genuinely overheating (e.g. if the fan belt had broken or a hose had burst) - in that case I would expect it to stay hot until I switched off. I continued to drive home slowly (only a couple of miles in all), and this behaviour repeated itself a couple of times.
Does anyone know what this could indicate? Could there be a thermostat problem? I was hoping someone would recognise the symptoms and be able to advise.
Thanks
Flummoxed

| is250 vs. 325i Robert A. Cibiras 21:07:39 |
| | I am interested in trading my Acura TL, and have narrowed the most likely possible replacements to the Lexus is250 and the BMW 325i, both with manual transmission.
I am interested in whatever input anyone might have. I have owned a number of Toyotas over the years, but no Lexus and no BMW.
I have heard that Lexus takes Toyota's quality and attention to detail to the next level, and that in the long run BMW is very expensive to maintain. I have friends who own both - and swear they wouldn't drive anything else.
Suggestions, pros, cons, all info would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
Robert

| Wrong Oil? Jeff 18:44:05 |
| | A year and a half ago I became a BMW owner for the first time purchasing a pre-owned 2000 E39.
My first heart attack nearly came the first time it was due for service and I took it to the local BMW dealership. The cost for an oil change in my opinion was way over inflated.
I since then started taking it to a local mechanic that was recommended to me by a friend who gets his Mercedes serviced there.
It's been a little over a year that I have been taking the car to the local mechanic and overall I am pretty pleased, or at least I was until now.
Two weeks ago I dropped it off after hours to have it serviced the next day. The next morning the mechanic called me and asked me if I wanted synthetic oil. I found this odd, while I don't know much about the mechanics of the car, there is a placard underneath the hood that clearly states the type of oil to be used ONLY. And it does state synthetic oil!
I got the bill and the total for the oil change was $60+ and this to me would explain why the BMW dealer charges $98.00.
I looked back at all the previous bills and noticed the oil changes were $24 and to me that says they DID NOT use the proper oil!!!!
What is the consequences for using the wrong type of oil? The previous invoices did not state what type they used but I am guessing 10W30 or close to it.
Could this have damaged my engine or will I see some long term affects? If so, how do I approach the shop owner about this? They seem to be friendly and honest mechanics but it's clearly evident they don't know much about BMW's.
Jeff
