| timing belt broke on a 1999 lhs chrysler Guest 00:19:33 |
| | On my 99 LHS the water pump locked up and burnt the timing belt up. I replaced the timing belt the tensioner and the water pump lined it it up and it will only run if you hold the throttle to the floor it will not idle at all. I though it was the cam sensor and I replaced it the engine light went out but I still have to hold the throtle to the floor to get it to run, Could it have bent the valves when it broke or when I put it back to gether and tightened the belt it moved from between the center of the 2 timing marks to the hole on the left could that have caused it?

| 2008 Town & Country rear bumper problem Qx 06:33:12 |
| | I have noticed that the black vinyl bumper protector is lifting at the center, especially when the car sits out in the sun. The dealer says he'll have to order another strip to correct the problem (I was thinking just a little contractor's cement would work, but the fix is his choice). Is anyone else having this problem? I've seen several others on the road with the same problem. Did a replacement fix the problem? (This is the black strip just below the tailgate to protect the bumper from scuff or drag marks as you load/unload the cargo area). TIA

| Re: Chrysler to close So. St. Louis Plant Rob 00:28:24 |
| | June 30, 2008 - 3:25 pm ET UPDATED: 6/30/08 4:30 p.m. EDT
Chrysler LLC plans to idle its St. Louis South minivan plant indefinitely, effective Oct. 31. Chrysler is also cutting production at its St. Louis North truck plant to one shift, effective Sept. 2.
But Chrysler co-president Tom LaSorda said Monday that it is not likely the plant will reopen.
"We see no intent to rerun this plant. We're idling it and it will likely be fully closed."
St. Louis South, in Fenton, Mo., has been making minivans on one shift and employs about 1,500 workers. The St. Louis North plant, which had been working on two shifts, will lose 900 jobs after the second shift ends.
St. Louis South makes three vehicles: the Chrysler Town and Country, the Dodge Grand Caravan and the Chrysler Grand Voyager for Europe. Chrysler also makes minivans at its Windsor, Ontario, assembly plant on three shifts. Two of those shifts make Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans. The third shift makes the Volkswagen Routan.
LaSorda said Chrysler had a difficult choice to make between Windsor and St. Louis South: "When you look at one plant on three shifts and another on one, we had no choice but to go with the volume plant. We have the capacity for three shifts of work. So that's what we did. Those are the tough decisions we have to make."
For the first five months of 2008, sales of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan have declined 13.4 percent and 34.6 percent respectively.
Jim Press, Chrysler co-president, said economic factors drove Chrysler's decision.
"Obviously we're at slow point. Consumer confidence has been hit by oil prices and the credit crunch. It has created a situation if we want to meet or exceed the targets we have to move responsibly. We're a market-driven company and it's important to match production" to sales.
St. Louis lost out for political and economic reasons, said Glenn Kage Jr., financial secretary at UAW Local 136 representing workers at the St. Louis North pickup plant.
Chrysler can make minivans in Windsor, Ontario, for $1,000 per vehicle less than St. Louis South because of the savings to the company of Canada's national health care system, Kage said.
St. Louis North also is at a disadvantage because it is smaller than its counterpart pick-up assembly plant in Warren, Mich., Kage said. St. Louis North can churn out only 41 pickups per hour at full capacity compared with 65 at Warren, he said. Politically, Chrysler was more willing to sacrifice a plant in St. Louis far from Detroit than a plant like Warren or Windsor in its own backyard, he said.
"Detroit's a national industrial hub and we're far away," he said.
Kage downplayed the influence of labor relations on the decision. St. Louis North and South soundly defeated last fall's master contract agreement between Chrysler and the UAW.
That defeat encouraged dissidents and forced a full-court lobbying effort at crucial Detroit-area locals by UAW President Ron Gettelfinger and his minions to narrowly pass the contract. One of the locals that passed the agreement was Warren Truck.
"I wouldn't put too much into the negotiations," Kage said. The St. Louis UAW locals already had key local operating agreements before the master negotiations, granting flexibility in work rules and other factory operations, he said.
Kage said Chrysler has spent about $300 million over the past two years on plant improvements at St. Louis South and $500 million at St. Louis North. He said he hoped the State of Missouri would audit the tax abatements granted for the investments in light of job promises made for the factories.

| P0420 Code On 1996 Plymouth Vayager Minivan fab4 via CarKB.com 03:40:25 |
| | I'm getting a code P0420 ( Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold) on my 1996 Plymouth Voyage Minivan. It has 160,000 miles with a 3.0 Engine. I was able to clear the "Check Engine Soon Light" with my code reader, but it keeps coming back after a couple of days. Now it stays on constantly, but can be cleared. I replace both the before and after oxygen sensors and the EGR valve, which included cleaning the EGR valve tube. The timing belt and water pump was replaced a year ago. The car runs good with an occasional lifter ticking (but that’s another issue for later). Any ideas?

How many keys do you have for this vehicle? I don't think this car would have the SKIM (Sentry Key Immobilizer Module) system, as it is a 1998 Intrepid. Chrysler added the SKIM option for the 1999 model year, it was not previously available for LH vehicles. Neither my '98 nor '99 Concordes have SKIM, a fact that I am very thankful for.
From what I read on the LH car forums, SKIM is proof that technology can be a blessing or a curse. It makes DIY'ers more reliant on the dealer to do the simplest diagnostic and repair tasks at great expense, and impedes or eliminates being able to swap very inexpensive modules from salvage yards that otherwise would be perfectly interchangeable.
IMO, the benefits of things like SKIM are far outweighed by the costs and troubles they cause. I would even submit that many cars go to the junk yard early because people simply can't afford the greatly inflated costs of troubleshooting and repair of systems that otherwise could be fixed very inexpensively by the DIY'er.

I'm not positive, but I think there was a Technical Service Bulletin about this, or a related issue. I vaugely recall reading about a problem with the shifter "popping out of park" or something like that, and something related to the interlock switch. Might be related to what you had, or might be totally different. Not sure. If the TSB applies to your car, the dealer will repair for no charge. Don't count on the "no charge" part

Would appreciate areas I might check which might get rid of the squeak. Thanks in advance... Ralph Griffith There have been reports of more than a couple of rack failures on the various LH-specific car forums. I don't recall any being preceded by squeaking noises. The posts I recall mentioned the rack simply locking up with little or no warning. Also, if the noise is not belt or tensioner pulley-related, sometimes it is found that replacing the p.s. fluid with ATF+4 will quiet things down. But don't assume anything I've said - just make sure your rack isn't getting ready to fail. I don't mean to lull you into a false sense of security if it is more serious than belt, tensioner, or fluid needing replacing. | PICS: 2009 Dodge Challenger Sales Brochure out - UHQ Scans Jla 18:54:02 |
| | In the galleries below, you'll find the full brochure for the 2009 Dodge Challenger, and yeah, there's some good stuff to be found in there. We're particularly fond of the R/T Classic package, which gets a coat of B5 Blue, 20" torq-thrust lookalikes, T/A-style stripes, and the old-school script Challenger badge on the front fender. Unfortunately, while Chrysler was cooking up the retro badging, they neglected to order up some nouveau Fratzogs to really finish off the look, so the Ram-head shield sits on the hood, instead. Too bad. As for the rest of the car? Badass. There are some pretty cool stripe and wheel options to be had regardless of trim level, plus what's sure to be a bevy of aftermarket parts from Mopar and other third parties. Finally, Chrysler's offering a factory R/T Track Pack that, in its most aggressive form, combines the 6-speed Tremec with 20" wheels and a 3.91 rear axle ratio. Bring money for tires. Ford is the king of leveraging its heritage to keep the Mustang interesting. Chrysler has a shot at doing the same thing here with the Challenger. From the looks of things, it's off to a good start. That R/T Classic? Yeah, we could roll like that.

| | jaygreg wrote:
My 2000 Chrysler Concorde LXi was found to need a right inner control arm according to a repair shop yesterday. I was told the job requires that the plenum be removed first. When I got home and plowed into my factory service manual I bought from Chrysler, I found the repair doesn’t require the removal of the plenum. A 1995 Concorde I owned had the same problem so I pulled my file and found the only parts I bought were two #4695385 bushings. Assuming there’s been little ware on the knuckle into which this bushings insert, can I be reasonably certain all I need to buy are two bushings rather than complete inner control arms? Can I replace the bushing without removing the arms themselves and, if so, is there any trick to inserting the bushings since leaning over the car to mid- firewall level seems to be a bit awkward for an old guy in his 60's.... like soaping the bushings with liquid detergent first? We may have a terminology problem here. I can't tell if you're talking about the control arm bushing (there's no inner and outer on that), *OR* if you're talking about the inner tie rod bushing. Both do go bad.
For the inner tie rod bushing, the cowling at the bottom of the windshield needs to come off.
For the control arm (attaches the bottom of the front wheel to the frame), nothing but the control arm needs to come off (with that corner jacked up and on jack stands).
That's why I'm uncertain about which part you are talking about.
*IF* you're talking about the control arm bushing, I'd replace the whole control arm because it's $40 to $60, and bh the time you pay the labor of pressing the old bushing out and the new bushing in, you might as well replace the whole thing. *AND* that way, you get a new ball joint on the other end of the control arm - chances are it's about worn out too, but even if not, why take the chance just to questionably save a very few dollars.
*IF* you're talking about the inner tie rod bushings, then - yes - just replace the bushings. Have them replaced on both right and left inner tie rods at the same time since most of the labor is getting into the area, and those bushings are known for wearing out. And you get bushings for both in one set.
Re-reading your last paragraph, it seems to me that you are talking about the inner tie rod bushings and not the control arm or control arm bushing.
The aftermarket kits for those bushings are two-part bushings. No grease necessary to install - one half pushes into one side of the hole, the other half from the other side - no pressing needed.
I prefer to detach the outer tie rod from the strut bracket and pull the whole inner and outer tie rod assembly out as an assembly. It can be difficult to get things lined up perfectly to get the inner tie rod bolts started back into the steering rack without cross-threading. Having the other end detached makes that part easy. Then, getting the outer tie rod stud into back into the strut bracket after the inner tie rod bolt is in is very easy.
HTH!

The little check/service engine icon light came on in my 01 PT Cruiser. I had a code pulled and was told it's a switch on the power steering pressure line that boosts the idle so the engine doesn't stall when parallel parking. The switch was back ordered at the Chrysler dealer, but they told me this switch, when faulty, should NOT turn the check engine light on. I went back to my mechanic, he connected his scanner to the onboard computer on my car, and once again, it showed that this switch was bad and had turned the check engine light on. Who is correct, the mechanic or the dealer? That switch will set a fault code if a problem is detected. Replace the switch and Happy Motoring!!
