| How to replace the light bulbs behind the dashboard? Arctic Wolf 21:33:51 |
| | I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX 2 door coupe. There are three dials next to the radio. Mode Control Dial Temperature Control Dial Fan Control Dial When the headlights are turned on, the three dials light up (nomally). However, now, the Temperature Control Dial is half lit, and the Fan Control Dial is not lit at all. The Mode Control Dial is fully lit as usual. My assumption is that there are two light bulbs for these three dials, and the bottom bulb is broken. Can I replace the light bulb myself without too much trouble, or does this need to be taken into the shop?

My 94 Honda Civic EX automatic will not start. It has plenty of battery juice, and turns over, just no ignition. Any recommendations? I'd like to try to fix this without going into a shop.
Related info: It's very humid, rainy. This happened a once couple months ago, and seemed to resolv itself w/o repair.
Thanks.

If you're clueless, so are the monkeys who did the work on your car. That Check Engine light MEANS SOMETHING.
Go here to see how to retrieve the error code number from the Check Engine light: http://www.tegger.com/hondafaq/misc/3173_ICCR_E_14JAN03.pdf Specifically see page 15. The "tool" they refer to is a straightened paper clip, with which you jump the two terminals on the Service Check connector. The location of that is on page 18.
You should also phone the garages that did the work and ask what error codes they observed.

I have a 2004 Honda Accord with just over 26 thousand miles and the original battery. Is it time for me to replace the battery yet? On the one hand, I do NOT believe in waiting for the battery to go bad. I agree. My reading indicates an older battery puts strain on the alternator.
Some people say that can tell by the fact that they need to crank a bit longer to start the car, but I'm not sure I'd notice. I too say I can tell this with my 91 Civic (original owner). In fact, in 2000 before I knew too much about the alternator, charging, and battery systems, I noted that the car had been starting with difficulty for several days prior to it dying so much that it would not start the car.
My 91 Civic is on its fourth battery, though I will likely replace it pre-emptively sometime late this year.
Do the five checks listed at http://honda.lioness.googlepages.com/battery%26alternatortips to get a handle on how your system is doing. If the battery voltage is over 12.5 volts with the engine off and no electrical loads (like lights), it's probably fine. If it has been jumped a few times, consider replacing it pre-emptively.
Even if I knew I would notice and avoided getting stranded, I'd rather get it done at my leisure rather than have to drop everything I'm doing to take care of it. On the other hand, the fact that a Honda battery (assuming it isn't the original one, which is warrantied for only 3 years, with the last year prorated) is warrantied for 100 months (first 3 years fully warrantied, remaining term prorated) makes me think I could wait at least another year. The general rule I've heard is to replace a battery a year before the warranty expires. I live in Iowa, so I'm not subject to the battery-killing heat of Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Tucson. Of course, I've heard that very cold temperatures (like last winter) are also bad for car batteries. The heat's by far the worst.

My 1991 Accord makes a high-pitched squealing sound when the engine is running. The sound only goes away when I press the clutch pedal. I don't actually need to disengage the clutch...just push the pedal far enough to (I assume) contact the release bearing. Does anyone here know what is causing it? Can I fix it without pulling the tranny off the engine?

The cable ends require to be greased where they attach to the shift lever mechanism. Evidently the grease eventually wears off.
Looks like this is done from the inside of the car, after removal of the trim panels.
Removal of the trim is very tricky. I strongly recommend you purchase a shop manual, which outlines the procedure in great detail. Try eBay or www.helminc.com

I recenlty replaced the brake switch at the pedal (couldn't get lights or out of park without using the emergency release on the column). Obviously there isn't much to go wrong on this repair, but coincidentally or not, I now have an intermitent situation where the brake pedal remains in a partially depressed position after getting into gear and movement can only be achieved under the drag of the brake. My wife claims that this occurs while at cruise occassionally resulting in the van shuttering violently. It is only resovled at cruise by her lifting the pedal upward with her foot to relieve the pressure. I got it resolved this morning, but have no idea how. Cycled the car on and off, forward to reverse a few times, removed cap to the fluid reservoir, then it went back to normal. I have checked for obstruction at the pedal and for proper installation of the switch, nothing. It seems to be hydraulic like a suction. I appreciate any thoughts. (ABS, Master Cylinder, etc.....)
Is the brake pedal spring still connected and not broken?

| Carfax, Buying Used, & Craigslist.org Elle 00:15:48 |
| | I finally got serious about looking for a second Honda Civic, c. 1989-1997. A few observations:
-- A friend of mine convinced me Carfax was worth $35 for 30 days, unlimited checks. For the four cars I checked, it revealed: (a) Odometer tampering with two, with the advertised mileage being over 100k lower than the Carfax title reported mileage; (b) lying about the number of owners for a third; it had had four owners in 18 months. Many reports attest to how Carfax is not perfect, but so far it sure saved me some trouble.
-- Most persistent major mechanical problems have been poor air conditioning and suspect CV joints. I watch especially for blown head gaskets. So far for around half a dozen cars I have actually examined: no residue on the oil cap; oil in the reservoir; smell from exhaust pipe; white puff from exhaust pipe.
-- craigslist.org has been my best resource. (Thanks to regular poster JT for sending me there!) Ebay, autotrader.com and dealers have turned up little. Dealers do not like to deal in cars that do not involve financing, so low price beaters generally are not advertised for sale by them. Though oddly, on my Carfax checks, there's always an advertisement by dealers for a 199- Civic, complete with VIN. Then I call the dealer, and the car is not there. Maybe when a car is traded in, carfax automatically retrieves it and its filter puts the ad up? But in fact most of these cars are sold at auction? Craigslist people have all been good about meeting at the designated time and test driving (though I almost always have a friend with me). Craigs list sellers where I am have been mostly but not entirely honest, at least insofar as the carfax checks indicate.
-- used car dealers are a hoot! Unless you know what to look for on these older Hondas, do not buy from a used dealer. A fine looking Honda Civic DX came up on Craig's list at a mom n' pop used car dealership. I went to see it. Great body, engine compartment sparkled, fluids looked clean and topped off; but no muffler; no radio; check engine light was on; windshield was cracked, miles advertised were 124k and carfax said it was in fact over 271k miles a year ago. I am considering making a very low offer (after telling the dealership about the flawed title tampered odometer) just for the shell.
Further advice?

I hooked the V/O meter up to check for batt drain and sure enough you could watch it falling off from 12.5v down to the high 10's low 11's...until I pulled the fuse for the interior lighting circuit when it stabilized. Further discovered that if the driver's door is closed (circuit supposedly open) I get the voltage leak-off. If door is open everythink is OK. Passenger door switch does not cause same behaviour. Chased wires and saw that drivers door switch wire(just one) only runs to the passenger door switch. That is to say that this wire appears to only have 2 points, A and B, and goes nowhere else in the car. This circuit only seems to connect the two door switches. If true, how the hell does this circuit operate? I thought I was so close. Help guys! Thanks. be methodical and forget the light switches for the moment. get a 12V bulb, and use it as a dummy fuse for each of the smaller fuses in both fuse boxes. if it lights, whichever fuse you have shows which circuit to trace. if it doesn't light, measure the voltage across it. if you have voltage, you have current, and you need to check that circuit. bear in mind that some circuits are "always on", notably the ecu, stereo, etc.
having determined which circuit, look for obvious problems. stereo installations are very common fault points. start at one end of a circuit and follow through to the other. anywhere where factory wiring has been cut or altered is a suspect.
or it could be something simple like a trunk light. the above circuit testing will tell you.
going back to your door switches, it's common for the less-used switch to corrode internally. unscrew, clean and reinstall with a little silicone grease on it. the circuit works by having a live light feed and grounding it to complete the circuit. but a switch that doesn't make contact is not your problem. and you shouldn't be getting a "leak" if the switch is working properly. if the door is open, the circuit should make and the cabin light should come on.
