| NB Timing Belt life Chris D'Agnolo 22:28:41 |
| | I know the standard stuff, scheduled replacement @ 60k, but non-interference so, why not go to 90k, it probably still won't break.
Well, I'm nearing 90k and I know I'm going to have to do this but, can anybody tell me of an NB timing belt that DID actually break and at what mileage it happened?
I would appreciate any accurate info.
Thanks, Chris -- 99BBB

| The dreaded oil/tire thread! Xs11e 05:54:45 |
| | Which oil is best? Should I use Super Sewer Sludge 90w-250 Synthetic?
Never mind, I don't have the heart to start an oil thread....
So what do people think of Kumho tires, specifically the AST?
I'm still debating new tires because it upsets my natural cheapness. My existing tires have almost 60% tread remaining but they have the traction of greased ice due to drying out and becoming hard so....
Kumho's are available to me for a not too awful price, just under $600 mounted and balanced on white Rota Speed 5 Wheels, wheels are 15x6.5, tires are 195/50z/R15.
Opinions? I've read reviews on Miata Net, Discount Tire, Tire Rack, etc. and learned that the tires are the absolute WORST/BEST tire ever, will last 5/900,000 miles, have FANTASTIC/NONEXISTENT wet traction, etc.
Summary, I find the reviews aren't much help but what do you guys say?

I've mentioned before that the headlights on my '92 don't always go up when I turn the lights on. It's VERY rare, maybe once a month or less and I can raise them by using the button on the dashboard so I haven't worried about it too much until..... Last night, I drove the car, it's been sitting because of the torn out rear window coupled with the weather reports showing rain for the last week (no rain, but they kept saying it would!)... When I started out, I turned on the lights but they wouldn't pop up so I used the button and they came up. I turned them off, lowered them and tried the light switch again, no popup so I used the button again and drove home. When I got home the lights wouldn't go down. Turning them off didn't work, using the button didn't work. Several attempts didn't work so I went to bed. This AM I looked at the wiring diagram, figured I'd blown a fuse and went out to check..... the lights were down! I turned them on, they didn't pop up, turned them off and used the button and they went up and down as they should. Turned them on and they popped up and went down as they should and all is normal again. WTF? I don't know where to start. I'd like to check the headlight switch and clean contacts but it's way too much work to remove it.... maybe replace the retractor relay but that isn't likely the problem... That sounds like the same gremlin that lived in my '90.
1. Check the grounds on the headlight motors. 2. Check the connector between the headlight motor and the wiring harness. It has several little copper "tongues" - my problem was that one of them was broken and would lose connectivity. Then I'd hit a bump and it would work again.
And no, you cannot buy that connector from Mazda - they want to sell you the whole motor assembly.
If you do need that connector, let me know - I've still got a headlight motor from the '90 in the basement with the connector still attached.

| Re: 2008 Miata - slipping out of 4th gear? Chuck 01:37:06 |
| | Defective Transmission. At 600 miles, the dealer should replace the transmission (or the whole car) You should actually shift at a little higher RPM than 3000 or so. That's about when the engine starts to develop decent power. Miata engines are designed for higher RPM use than most american engines.
<janinelc@gmail.com> wrote in message news:09f06461-b2ac-439a-b1b2-74debd98a07c@25g2000hsx.googlegroups.com...
I have a brand spanking new 2008 Miata (only 90 miles on it when I got it last week!) with a 6 speed transmission. I have 600 miles on it now and noticed something strange and I don't know if it's me or the car. I generally shift around 2500-3000 rpm for faster acceleration and don't rev the engine more than 3100 - 3200. The last time I drove a manual was a '85 Isuzu Trooper with only 4 speeds so I'm relearning my shifting techniques. What happens is I'll be in 4th gear and all of a sudden the stick shift pops out into neutral. The first time it happened I was very surprised as this had never happened to me in a manual car before. I just put the clutch in and popped it back into 4th. The 2nd time it happened, I noticed that I was around 3K rpm. I tried revving higher in 4th thinking that maybe these newer manual transmissions were telling me I needed to get into the next gear, but I couldn't force it to pop out into neutral anywhere between 2000 - 3500 rpm in fourth gear. The 3rd time it happened, I noticed again that I was around 3000 rpm when it popped into neutral. Again tried revving higher but I couldn't duplicate it. Is this normal? Or do I have a defective 4th gear? It doesn't happen all the time, but the fact that it has happened 3 times in less than a week concerns me. I made sure my hand wasn't anywhere near it the last two times (so I know my hand isn't hitting the knob), the clutch was out (no foot on the clutch) in all 3 times, it's always happened when it's been a fairly straight road, not really accelerating to shift into 5th but just cruising along. It only has happened in the 4th gear, it hasn't occurred in any other gears. I guess my next step is to check with the dealer, as I'm sure it's covered under warranty. I would appreciate any ideas.

I have a 2004 M5 mazdaspeed. The car is great except that the steering wheel hides the turn indicators from my line of sight. Also, the turn indicator sound is so low that I can not hear it with the top down. Does anyone know of an indicator light or sounder that I can mount onto this car so that I do not drive for 5 or 6 miles or more with the turn indicator on? Sorry I have no suggestions for you but I love you just for asking. That whole drive forever with your blinker on makes me crazy.

| Clutch + flywheel Clark Friedrichs 06:32:02 |
| | I need a new clutch in my '03, and while I'm replacing that, I was debating about a lighter flywheel. Flying Miata has 2: 10+ lbs. and 13+ lbs. This is a street car so I don't need the lighter of the two. I'm told that a lighter flywheel will improve throttle response by letting the engine rev quicker and smoother while retaining a smooth idle. Any thoughts/recommendations?

How do I get the old bulb out and the new bulb in on a '99 MX-5? I pulled the big round rubber grommet off the backside, but there's two clips holding the bulb...I bent one moving it, and can't reach the other. I have reached the limits of my limited expertise. I had the same problem two years ago with my '99, and when I figured it out I posted it here. The following is a cut-n-paste:
--- begin ---
The back of the light bulb has three flat metal electrodes. If you look close you'll see there are little holes through them. The first thing you want to do is disconnect the black boxy power connector from the back of the burned-out bulb, but if you grab the connector that plugs onto these electrodes by the top and bottom, you can tug and tug but it won't come off. Grab it by the sides instead and squeeze in a little, it's got a latch which, when you squeeze it, releases the pins that hook into the holes on the electrodes, and then the connector slips off easily. I'd never seen a headlight connector that latched onto the bulb that way before. All this is a lot easier, too, if you do it in the daylight where you can actually see, rather than at night under a street lamp.
Next pull off the waterproof rubber sleeve, and provided it's daylight out you'll see a wire spring holding the bulb in place from above and below. If you're working on the (US) passenger-side light facing the back of the car, the spring is hinged on your right. Take your finger and press down and in on the top left end of the spring, and it comes free from where it's hooked on the metal housing and swings out to the right. Now the bad bulb drops out and the new one slips into place. It has three fingers sticking out from it so you can only put it in the opening in the correct orientation (where the middle electrode is up). Put the rubber sleeve back on and slip on the electrical connector and you're done, a two-minute no-tools-necessary job once you know how.
--- end ---
Hope that helps! By "down and in" I meant "down" (toward the ground) an "in" (toward the front of the car.)
Also make sure you don't touch the new bulb with your fingers. Handle it with a clean paper towel or napkin. According to the package for the Sylvania halogen bulbs I bought, even just the infinitesmal amount of skin oil you leave on the bulb by touching it will cause it to burn out. The outside surface of halogen bulbs run very, very hot.

| FA: 1994 - 1997 Miata Lock Set Pws 19:43:19 |
| | Matching ignition switch, door handles with locks, and trunk lock from a 1996 Miata with 75,000 miles of use.
No heavy key rings ever used on on the ignition, at least after 10,000 miles when I bought it, not sure about before then.
I think that the ignition switch is specific to 1994-1997 models. Sorry, didn't save the console and glovebox locks.
If you buy these and mention that you heard about the auction here, I will drop the shipping in half within the United States.

| Who's here? Chris D'Agnolo 09:24:05 |
| | Well, it's been entirely too quiet around here lately. The only really interesting posts I've seen lately on this thread were political (off topic) and as much as I love this groups ability to stay on topic (unlike most newsgroups), it was at least nice to see human communication taking place. And hey, miata guys are so civil that even the politics didn't get totally ugly (good work guys). Anyway, at the risk of going off topic again here, I decided to re-post the info I previously gathered on who's hanging around here and where they are from. It turned out to be HUGELY entertaining for me and others seemed to get a kick out of it too SOOOO, just to stir the pot, here's the info again. I'd love to hear from anybody that's still hanging around and I'll even add / update my info and re-post it after (assuming I get SOME responses).
I've got a follow up that I want to do but thought I'd stir the pot before I threw a soup bone in there
I have t appologize to Brunno, we had some great conversations back and forth comparing and contrasting the US of A and Denmark (VERY interesting) and my computer bit the dust and I lost my address book and all my old inbox / sent items so, I dropped the ball (the conversation). I imagine he's still lurking here ;-0
Thanks, Chris 99BBB

| Gas mileage. Xs11e 23:55:16 |
| | I filled up today after my trip to California last week and the average came out to around 28.4 mpg for the entire trip, that includes some driving around there and here but mostly freeway and highway driving. I think the average might have been higher if I could have avoided the traffic jams on I-15 heading to and from San Diego on Wednesday and the equally bad jams on I-10 coming home.
Most of the interstate travel was around 80mph with sections of stop and start... Most of the off freeway driving was around 40-50 mph.
Does that sound about right for a 1600cc Miata? I was hoping for a couple more miles per gallon but I guess it's not too far off, is it? I'm wondering what mileage others have recorded on overall driving (as opposed to all freeway).

I think that they were $350.00 each when the previous owner bought them.

| Imprint in Plastic Window Steve Lapp 20:30:50 |
| | I have a window protector for my '97 Miata and it has worked well. Last week, I let a friend borrow the car and when he put the top down, he put the window ON the protector instead of IN the protector. My window now has four vertical imprints from the leather cover. I've tried Blue Magic scratch remover and polisher, which I've used on the window with good success, a hair dryer to heat the window where the imprints are to rub them out, and letting the car sit in the sun with the window in the protector with books on top to try to iron the imprints out. While the last option, seemed to dull the imprints a little, they are still there. Does anyone have any other ideas on what to try here? Thanks in advance for any help.
