1986 420 sel fuel pump relay location Mooky 14:47:51
My dad has an '86 420 SEL which starts and then dies. He read on other
forums online that it might be the fuel filter, which turns out it's
not. It might be the fuel pump, which I read you have to get 2, or it
mught be the fuel relay pump and I would like to know where the relay
pump would be located. We looked, but couldn't tell which one it was.
It died at my Grandmother's house and he had the mechanic look at it to
see if it was the fuel filter. We were hoping it was, but the filter is
practically new. Anyway we had my Grandmother's car and took it back
over there to see if we could find the fuel pump relay. No luck, but my
dad started the car and it started right up. We made it home and then
he tried to start it again and no luck. Maybe it will start agin when
the engine's cold. Hope someone can help here. Thanks.

No dashboard light-- 1983 300D Mercedes Guest 03:46:13
 Hi,

I have had my 1983 300D for about 6 mo, and the entire time the light
on the dashboard has not worked. It flickered on ONCE when I was on a
roadtrip, but I don't know why, and it was momentary. Leads me to
believe something is loose? All fuses look intact. All other lights in
the dashboard work, i.e. the glowplug light, oil, battery, etc when you
turn the key.

Dead bulb? Wiring? Any ideas? I don't think I have the dimmer switch
that I saw mentioned in some previous postings as a troubleshoot....

Does anyone know how to replace the bulb on the dash ?

Hoping not to get a speeding ticket tonite-
Kate

Starting problems Armand Dasoveanu via CarKB.com 00:56:41
I have a 1994 C180 and it's been a year now since my car starts running
after I try several times (3,5,8...or even 20 lately) to turn the key into
ignition switch. But every time the motor starts running it can be heard a
high "relay like" sound just a second before. When this sound appears
immediately after I put the key in the second position for the first time
(like I think it should be every time) the motor always starts. Everything
after is working perfectly.
PLEASE HELP!!!! Thank you in advance!

Re: 190E Engine Noise Nightmare 00:10:08
I would say camshaft, cause a friend of mine have a 1993 190 too and got the
same problem a couple of years ago,he got the suggestion to get a new one
from a mechanic at the MB Garage.
It helped it sounded like a new car after the change.

93' 190E 2.3 Automatic
It has this tapping rapping not quite a knock sound, except when you're
starting it, it's sounds terrible when it's being cranked.
Then after it starts it runs fine except for the tapping, it's louder than
just a tick tick like a tappet, but it's not a real heavy metal to metal
thunk thunk either, except when cranking to start.
The thing about it is, if the engine is under a load, accelerating or if
you brake and run the engine up over 1.1k or 1.2k, the noise just goes
away, or at least is almost undetectable. It is noticable at idle, louder
when decelerating, and loudest when cranking to start.
I've had it to the MB Master Tech. Had the bottom end checked, put in new
rod bearings. Didn't help. Everything else looked fine. Compression test
and leak down were good. Had the oil analyzed for metal particles, it
seemed fine. It doesn't miss or anything. It doesn't use much oil or
water, a little but nothing out of the ordinary for a 14 year old car. It
runs fine, except the noise.
To me it sounds like it's right in the middle of the engine at cylinder #
3, but I'm no tech.
This thing has people stumped all over the east coast, and no one wants to
say for sure what it is. Of course they won't mind charging to take the
engine apart and start replacing things until they get it right, but I'd
like someone to know for sure what it is BEFORE they start into it.
Any thoughts on this ???
Thx

I have a 1999 SLK that I bought new, and it has been a trouble-free car
except for a couple of problems: the reservoir for the windshield washer
fluid had to be replaced because of a leak, and just recently the tail lamp
assembly was replaced free of charge in a safety-related recall.

Hello,
In my car Mazda 2002 MPV engine light was turned on. I am going to a
dealer to check it, but browsing through internet I found information
that actually I can to do this test myself - what I need is a software
and some adapter that will connect my car to PC, and I plan to do this
in a future. Here are my questions:
Where can I find a FAQ with description how to do it?
Can I connect it to PocketPC device?
Can I connect it to USB port on a laptop?
What kind of software do you recommend?
Thanks,
Zalek
As Jim Warman has said - they will read it for free, but they won't
understand it any better than you do. The codes can send an
experienced tech running in circles sometimes, because the problem the
computer sees (the code it displays) is the RESULT of the problem, not
always the cause. An engine can throw a "lean run" type code without
any code referring to the O2 sensor, and the O2 sensor can be the
fault. Likewise, it can throw an O2 sensor code when it is actually
something causing the engine to run so rich or so lean that the O2
sensor can't clock. - Many other situations like that where you can
end up replacing a bushel of parts and still not find the problem.
The dealer tech has the best chance of finding the problem first try -
because he's more likely to already have seen it before. A good
independent who is familiar with make and model CAN be just as good,
but you don't know until you try.
The partscounter guy at AutoZone? The service is only worth something
if YOU know what to look for for a given code. He sure doesn't, unless
he's a mechanic who for some physical reason has had to quit wrenching
and is now making a living selling parts. They are few and far
between, but you MIGHT get lucky - there are a few out there.

Guess I have been lucky then....
On my Eclipse had them read it and it took right to the error - up to me to
figure it out but got it right with the first part.

Had a code on my T100 - same thing - it took me to a loose hose.

ALWAYS worth getting them to read it first!!!!

Need help on aftermarket speakers for '93 300E Guest 08:37:23
I was informed by the folks at Crutchfield.com that none of the speakers they stock will fit my
1993 300E. I was surprised as they have a pretty sophisticated knowledge of which speakers
will fit which cars and, obviously, have an incentive to sell product.

It's not like they carry a limited line of speakers either. They stock Polk, Alpine, Kicker, Blaupunkt,
Boston Acoustics, Eclipse, Infinity, JBL, Pioneer, Rockford Fosgate, and Sony.

The front dash speakers are blown. I'd like to replace the dash and the rear speakers, but can't
find a drop-in easy install replacement.

Do any speakers that are easily installed exist? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

1984 500sel euro light wiring Help ! Guest 06:56:06
 Hi all,
I just bought a 1984 500sel, and it was missing the headlights.
I bought a set of euro lights from a guy,
He rather butchered up the ends of the headlight chassis wires.
He cut the inside wires in the headlights themselvesI have the turn signals
working fine, bought new bulbs, and installed them but have no idea where
the wires coming out of the harness go on the headlights.
There are 4 wires color coded as follows,
brown
purple
white with a black stripe,
and yellow.
On the headlight halogen bulb, there are three wires,
one white, one yellow and one brown.
the brown one has a jumper on it.
I am assuming that goes to the fog light.
Would you know where the wires go ??
I have them toggled in right now.
The pins on the headlight themselves are useless right now as they have
been cut.
Thanks ahead,
Jim

560 SEL suspension conversion to air shocks Charles1943 00:24:58
I have a 1987 560 SEL and am tried of the costly repairs on the
Hydropneumatic rear suspension. On this modle the shocks run through the rear
coil springs.

Would it be possible to fit a set of air shocks (so I can adjust the height)
in place of this suspension?

Does the top Hydropneumatic shock which attaches to the body under the rear
seat use a standard shock bracket, so that the new air shocks will fit right
into it?

What about the rod portion of the shock that fits onto the lower control arm?
Any ideas on how to secure it? I haven't taken it apart yet , but at present
the bottom of the Hyropneumatic shock (rod portion) looks like it fits into a
plate on the lower control arm. The plate is attached with 2 bolts. Any ideas
would be helpful.

Thank you for any and all suggestions.

The concept that alignment is a job for the pros reminds me of a guy at
work from 20+ years ago. He was one of the guys that did field
service of our computer equipment. A real nice guy, but no common
sense and he was always getting himself into trouble because of it.
The guy was alwasy just about broke and people were always feeling
sorry for him and trying to give him advice to help him out, but to no
avail.
One day he's telling me how he's gonna replace the torsion bar in the
front suspension of his Dodge Diplomat, which had broken. Now this guy
lived in an apartment building and had limited tools, no lift, jack
stands etc. Doesn't seem like the kind of job I'd attempt, given that
you could have it done professionally at a reasonable price. I
suggested it would likely be better and worth it to take it to a shop.
On Monday he comes in with his arm in a sling, having injured it while
doing the work.
Then he proceeds to tell me that now all he needs to do is the
alignment, which again, he's gonna do himself. I try to tell him that
I don't see how that's possible without the right equipment. He says
no problem, you just measure a few things using a ruler, no problem.
I try to tell him this is one of those things you shouldn't do yourself
and he can get it professionally done at that time for $75-100.
About 3 months later, he;s telling me his latest tale of trouble.
Seems his front tires, which are relatively new, are now bald on the
edges of the tread and he needs new ones.
Perhaps his all time classic story of flawed thinking was when his wife
was driving their car and had an accident. He was going around telling
everyone how unfair it was because she was being blaimed for the
accident. Seems she was crossing a wet bridge, lost control, spun out
and into the path of a car coming the other way. He kept saying "It
wasn't her fault. HE hit her!"
knucklebuster wrote:

resulting in a permanent 20 degree positive camber of that wheel only.
The drive train functions fine, tho handling is poor from misalignment.
What's the likely cause?
Does it sound reasonable that the wishbone swingarm is bent?

it disappeared when I shut the engine off and restareted - hasn't
happened agaian until now. Have been reading that it could be a
Selector Unit fault in that it supplies fluid at the wrong pressure,
causing first gear to spin. We'll see....it's in with MB specialist
who is going to renew the fluid and filter as a first step.

correct.
There was no noise or anything, i reversed OK, Then went to
move forward and it would not move

If the problem goes away once you shut the engine off.... then the same
problem comes back later.... the car goes into 'Limp Home Mode'. One
forward gear, usually third or 4th plus reverse.
This is the car trying to tell you something is wrong. An authorised MB
dealer should be able to diagnose (with a computer) the problem and
extract fault codes to tell you what is wrong.
