| [FAQ] r.a.s.n.m FAQ -- Section 6 - All About rasnm Guest 15:52:51 |
| | 6.1 - Why is rasnm moderated?
Even though all Big 8 Usenet newsgroups have a Charter, in an unmoderated newsgroup there is no way to ensure that posts to the newsgroup abide by the Charter. Everyone is on the "honor system". Unfortunately, that oftentimes results in a newsgroup becoming a dumping ground for spam, profanity, off-topic posts, and (in the case of rasn - rec.autos.sport.nascar) flaming/bashing/personal attacks directed towards other posters, race teams, drivers and/or their families as well as the sport's media.
rasnm (rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated) was created to provide a forum where all topics related to NASCAR (and stockcar racing in general) can be discussed without these distractions. The tools exist to ensure that the discussion remains civil and follows the rasnm Charter guidelines via a team of human moderators and a robo-moderation software called S.T.U.M.P.
6.2 - What does it mean, registration?
Before you are permitted to post directly to rasnm without having a moderator review each of your submissions, your address must be register with S.T.U.M.P. Until this is done, all of your submissions will be kicked-out to a moderator for review. However, the first on-charter submission you make to rasnm will cause the moderator who receives your article to register your address with S.T.U.M.P. This wil get you on auto-approve status and your future submissions will go directly to the newsgroup, bypassing the moderators (unless an automatic trigger like profanity causes S.T.U.M.P. to kick-out your submission to a moderator for review). You will retain your auto-approve status indefinitely unless you demonstrate an unwillingness to abide by the rasnm Charter. Please note that any address you use to post to rasnm must be a respondable address, although it may be munged to defeat the spambots. If munged though, it must be decipherable by a human. For example, the address ward@burton.com could be munged as: wardNO@SPAMburton.com
6.3 - What specifically is considered off-charter?
Per the charter, the following are unacceptable:
1) Bashing 2) Flames 3) Trolls 4) Commercial and Money-Making Posts 5) Profanity/Racial Slurs 6) Crossposts 7) Binaries 8) Posts without a respondable email address 9) Quotes of more than a few lines of copyrighted material
Also, if the post is not related to NASCAR, stockcar racing or rasner activites, it is considered off-charter. However, it is impossible to anticipate every attempt at finding a loophole in the charter. Therefore, the spirit of all the rules should be followed as opposed to looking for leaks and loopholes.
For more information about what is and what is not on-charter, please refer to the Charter itself at http//rasnm.carracing.com
6.4 - So how does the rasnm moderation process work?
The first time you attempt to post to rasnm from any address, the S.T.U.M.P. software recognizes that your address has not yet been registered, and it forwards your article to a moderator for review. If your submission is on-charter and from a respondable address, the moderator will forward your article to the newsgroup and add your address to the auto-approve list. S.T.U.M.P. then sends you a "Welcome to rasnm" e-mail with brief guidelines to what is acceptable posting practice on this newsgroup as well as a pointer to the rasnm website which contains the Charter and FAQ's. An off-charter submission or a submission from a non-respondable address will be rejected by the moderator and your address will not be placed on the auto-approve list. Once you are on auto-approve status, you will retain that status unless you demonstate an unwillingness to abide by the rasnm Charter.
There are two other categories that moderators use in upholding the Charter: "hand-moderate" and "auto-reject". "Hand-moderate" status means that every article you attempt to post is forwarded to a moderator for approval. Posters who repeatedly violate the Charter guidelines may be placed on "hand-moderate" status until such time as the moderation team agrees that the poster should be returned to "auto-approve" status. "Auto-reject" status means that the software will bounce all attempts by you to post to rasnm. This category is used in extreme cases where a poster demonstrates that they have no intention of abiding by the rasnm Charter, as well as for spammers and mail-bombers. "Auto-reject" requires a 2/3 majority vote of the moderation team before it can be imposed.
In addition to these tools, the moderators are also able to mark a specific thread for "hand-moderate" status if the topic or tone of the thread has become off-charter.
6.5 - So does this mean I will never see an off-topic or off-Charter post on rasnm?
No, it does not mean that. Since 99.9% of the posters to rasnm are on "auto-approve" status, the moderators do not see their posts until it is on the newsgroup. A poster on "auto-approve" status could in fact begin to post off-charter material to the newsgroup. If that happens though, the moderators have the tools necessary to respond to these off-Charter violations - by either e-mailing the poster, placing them on "hand-moderate" status or placing them on "auto-reject" status.
6.6 - What do I do if I see an off-charter post on rasnm?
Nothing. Responding to off-charter posts is the job of the moderation team. Responding to off-Charter posts with another post to rasnm serves only to perpetuate the thread, so let the moderation team do their job. Also note that the moderators do not normally respond publicly to off-charter posts, preferring to work quietly behind the scenes to make rasnm a better newsgroup for us all.
If however, you are concerned about a particular post or thread which appears to you off-charter, then by all means voice your concerns to the moderation team via e-mail at rasnm-mods@carrcaing.com Just realize that they don't need to get 50 e-mails telling them about a flame or spam post that they would have already seen anyway.
6.7 - Do the moderators treat all participants on rasnm the same?
Yes and no. The rasnm Charter requires that the moderators treat all participants equally regardless of personal likes or dislikes, but it also instructs the moderators to evaluate each situation individually when responding to Charter violations.
What this means is that while two separate violations of the rasnm Charter may *appear* to be the same type of violation, the past history of the parties involved make each violation unique. Therefore the action taken by the moderators is determined by what the situation warrants. For instance, a violation of Charter by someone who has a history of abiding by the Charter in their posts may be ignored the first time. However, the same exact offense by someone who has repeatedly demonstrated their unwillingness to abide by the Charter may be dealt with more strongly.
6.8 - If I don't agree with a moderator's decision, what is my recourse?
You may appeal decisions to the moderation team by emailing them at rasnm-mods@carracing.com
6.9 - Who are the moderators?
The moderation team consists of:
John Martin - jtmartin@martincomputers.com Bob Paxton - bpaxton@carracing.com Lisa A. Carbrey - lcarbrey@carracing.com Martin Moleski - moleski@canisius.edu Chris Watkins - C_Watkins@carracing.com Ken Kraus - poppyken@hotmail.com

| [FAQ] [META] About Selling Tickets on RASNM Guest 14:49:06 |
| | The charter of r.a.s.n.m, which we have all agreed to follow, prohibits "Commercial or Money-Making Posts":
4) Commercial and Money-Making Posts are defined as posts whose primary purpose is to solicit a benefit for the poster. This would include, but is not limited to, advertisements of businesses, direct advertisements of goods and/or services for sale, posts advertising the availability of goods and/or services for sale through another medium, promotion of business opportunities, money-making schemes, and chain letters.
In the interests of allowing fans to help each other, the moderators have decided to allow the advertisement and sale of tickets ***at face value*** or ***below***. We do not consider this "money-making," since the sellers simply get back the money they have invested in the tickets.
Please MAKE SURE to put the FACE VALUE of the tickets in the post, and either the phrase "I am selling these at face value of $xxx" or "I am selling these for $xxx, which is below the face value of $yyy."
Scalping is an altogether different issue. Posters will lose their preapproved status for repeated attempts to sell tickets above face value.
We consider the advertisement of rooms to rent a commercial venture, since the only purpose of those ads seems to be to make money for the posters.

| [FAQ] Getting Started Posting on rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated Guest 12:45:07 |
| | The registration process outlined in the charter for new posters wanting to get started posting to rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated has been eliminated.
Now, instead of having to register an agreement to abide by the charter, new posters simply have to post an article like they would to any other USENET newsgroup. The first post from any given e-mail address kicks out to one of the moderators for review.
If the post is on-charter, the e-mail address from which it was posted is added to the robomoderator’s preapproved list. Future posts from that address will be reviewed by a human moderator only if it contains a word on the "bad words list". Otherwise, the robomoderator will automatically post it to the newsgroup.
Posters who wish to post from more than one e-mail address can either submit an article from each address, or request that the additional addresses be added to the preapproved list.
You may post from a spam-proofed address, but understand that if you do, it may be difficult or impossible for the robomoderator and/or the human moderation team to communicate with you.
New posters are still encouraged to read the charter which is available at http://rasnm.carracing.com.
Please note the following if you are unfamiliar with how moderated groups work in general.
When a post is made to a moderated group, it is sent to the group’s moderation address. It is not posted immediately to your news server as is the case with unmoderated groups. Therefore, it can take up to 12-24 hours for your post to appear in the group.
Unfortunately, things can happen along the way and posts do occasionally fail to reach the moderation address. If your post doesn’t show up after 24 hours, please contact the moderation team.
Per the charter, questions and comments about moderation decisions or procedures are off-topic for the group and should be directed to the moderators privately. A separate public e-mail list exists for the open discussion of these issues should the need for such a discussion arise.
Occasionally, a poster on preapprove will post something that wouldn’t make it past a human review. If you see something in the group that you think is inappropriate, please do not respond in the newsgroup. Contact the moderators directly.
The moderation team can be reached at rasnm-mods@carracing.com.

| [FAQ] Rationale for rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated Guest 12:35:08 |
| | On April 1, 1994, the USENET newsgroup rec.autos.sport was divided into several racing-related groups - one of which was rec.autos.sport.nascar, or "rasn" as it became known to it's participants. On August 13, 1998 a second nascar-related USENET newsgroup (this group) was voted into existence:
rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated, or "rasnm".
The rationale for the creation of this new USENET newsgroup was stated in the RFD and CFV as follows:
============================================================================
"NASCAR and stockcar racing, as well as other motorsports, have been the subjects of Usenet discussion for many years. The existing rec.autos.sport.nascar newsgroup (rasn) gets a total of well over a hundred messages a day during the off-season and that number can increase to two to four times that figure during the season, peaking at over 1000 a day during speedweeks. Much of this traffic is relevant and of high- quality, but there are also significant problems with spam, advertisements, Driver/Team/Sponsor/Car-Make/Media abuse, and attacks aimed at other posters to the newsgroup. Many former posters to RASN have left because of this situation.
Rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated is intended to be a forum where all topics related to NASCAR and stockcar racing can be discussed without these distractions. The primary focus of the group will be NASCAR's top 3 series: Winston Cup, Busch Grand National, and Craftsman Trucks.
Questions and answers about this sport will be welcomed and a FAQ will be maintained."

| No Testing this Year Tom S. 07:12:26 |
| | In an announcement that has been pretty much overlooked (IMHO), NASCAR announced on the Friday before the Homestead race that officials announced that
"testing would be suspended as of Jan. 1 on any track hosting Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Truck, or Camping World touring events... series president Mike Helton said he anticipates the ban lasting for all of next season."
While I know that the owners welcome it as a cost saving option and drivers mostly like to have a little more time off, I wonder about the impact.
Will the ban be total?? Including tire testing (think Brickyard)??
What are the safety implications?? Are we going to have more wrecks, slower races, etc., because the teams have to guess more about the setups??
I know we have a year and a half in the COT now, but a lot of teams struggled with setup all season
What do other's think about it??

| Why I dislike Brad Dougherty Amy 02:10:15 |
| | For the past few weeks, all Brad Dougherty could say was "Jimmie Johnsons going to win his 3rd Championship, I can't wait, it's so exciting, blah blah blah". His lack of objectivity annoys me to no end, especially because I would think ABC/ESPN would have hoped for a better points race so fans would be excited to watch the last race. He talks about being a fan, but shouldn't an announcer be objective?

1. DEJr outside the top 20. Not one of his better tracks. +1 A wheel bearing went out??? When was the last time that happened. had to be a long time ago.
2. David Ragan adds another top 10 to his resume +0 24th one lap down.... Not a top-10 finish. But he did finish 13th in points. The first non-chaser.
3. David Reutimann brings a smile to Mikey's face with a top 10 finish. +0 I think I read in the hometown paper that he had to stop for fuel with 11 to go , but danged if I can find it now. And N.com doesn't have the Lap-by-Lap posted, either. Anyway, he finished in 20th.
4. Marcos Ambrose brings the Little Debbie car in for a top-15 finish. +0 He tried, but received an introduction to the wall courtesy of Reed Sorenson sort of messed up his day.
5. No more than 5 Chasers in the top 12 +1 Five exactly! Hard to believe I got it. I would have thought the Chasers would be a little more aggressive in the last race.

| value of a NASCAR ticket John McCoy 02:11:01 |
| | I was offered free tickets to the Homestead Cup race. I turned them down. And that got me to wondering about the value of the tickets (in a real-world sense, not a dollar value).
Some years back I got free tickets several years running, and was happy to get them. One year, for the Busch race, I was running late and left home after 11, getting to the track in just over an hour (on the motorcycle, taking a back road and considerable liberties with the speed limit). It was a decent race, worth watching, and I got home in time to go out to dinner around 8.
This year, tho, the Cup race starts at 4 (!). Given that more folk know of the back-road route by now, it'll take the better part of 3 hours getting home...meaning that, unless the race runs pretty much caution free, I'd be home close to midnight.
And that's simply too late, too much time invested, for the quality of race I'd expect to see. I'm really not interested in sitting around in the sun all afternoon waiting for the pre-race BS to get over with, so I can watch a bunch of guys fight aero-push instead of passing.
So, to me, the value of the "free" tickets would actually be negative - you'd have to pay me, or give me some other thing of value, for me to use my time watching the race at the track.
Which is a sad commentary on where NASCAR has gone.

| | Well, this it it... fer all the marbles... so here are my top five (in no order, of course).
Edwards - 1 Harvick - 1 Kenseth -0 Hamlin -0 Biffle - 0
Speed and Truex both showed up on my radar this week, but I don't think they have the staying power to get the job done, so I bumped 'em fer Hamlin and Biffle.
My pick fer the winner... Cuzzin' Carl of course, but it wouldn't surprise me to see either Kenseth or the Biffster sneak in for a win too. Yippee! +3
I know pig picked Johnson for the win, but I think he will play it safe and will likely not even be a top fiver. He won't lay back much, but he will be VERY cautious. And he was! Congrats to JJ, Knaus, Hendrick, Chevy and everybody on the 48 team.... well done!

Top Dodge: Nobody's all that great, by the numbers, but you've got four guys all close to equal: Kahne, Newman and KuBu are all in a clump, but just a hair ahead of them is Reed Sorenson. Nope. Shoulda gone with Kahne. No point.
Largest # of cars in top 10: Interesting. Between qualifying and 3 practices, one manufacturer was dominant in each; none dominated more than one. But Homestead's been House of Roush for a long time; I'm going to say Ford will have the most in the top 10 (including tied for most in prediction). 3 Fjord. 5 Chebbie. No point.
Winner: I want it to be Cousin Carl. I really do. But I think there's a major risk that for the first time in Chase history, the final race winner and the champion will be the same guy......and the numbers really back that. | thinking about Nationwide fields John McCoy 02:30:00 |
| | There's 52 cars attempting the Nationwide race at Homestead. A big field for the last race is common, but next year everyone seems to expect short fields at a lot of races.
Here's something which NASCAR might look into, which ought to help that: tow money. It used to be common in many series (including NASCAR's top series, when it was called Grand National) for promotors to pay teams a small sum just to show up, to cover the cost of bringing the car to the track. That way the team was assured of not being out of pocket if they failed to run well, while the promotor was assured of a big, crowd-pleasing field.
So what I'm thinking is, in Nationwide the purse is about the same, $15k or $20k depending on the event, for all positions from 30th on back. So let's take something, say $5k, from the last 5 positions payout. That gives us a pool of $25. From that, we'll payout $2500 to each driver who attempts qualifying but fails to get in the race. That's to cover a set of tires and some gas money. More than 10 guys, just split the $25k evenly. Less than 10, put the extra back into the payout for the last 5 finishers in the race.
I see this achieving several ends:
it helps ensure big fields, which is good for attendance.
it helps open up more rides, which provides opportunities for young drivers.
it helps keep some marginal/regional teams in the sport, who might run a stronger program when the economy improves.
it discourages start-n-park, by opening up the money spread if a team finishes better than 38th.

| RPG - McCoy - Homestead John McCoy 02:30:00 |
| | Last one...
The Win: Greg Biffle has owned this race, but I don't think he'll continue his streak. I'm going to go with Kevin Harvick, who also runs this track decent and has been pretty respectable the last few races.
Best Ford: I'll go with Biffle to finish best of the Fords. If it were closer points-wise, I'd go with Edwards to make the extra effort and the rest of the Roush guys to make discretition the better part of valour, but since the points are moot I think they'll race and Biffle will be strong.
Best Dodge: Kahne's in trouble with the law down here, and I think maybe that'll put him in "drive it like you stole it" mode, to post the best Dodge finish.
Best Toyota: Reutimann's on pole, Speed is outside. Reut will run decent, Speed will not. Best Toyota at the end will be Kyle Busch.
Best Rookie: Man, got a bunch of 'em this week: Hornish, Smith, Speed, Ambrose, Keselowski, McCumbee, and Ambrose. Speed was really fast (in someone else's car) in quals. But Almirola has the most talent of the bunch, and I'll pick him for top rookie finish.
Story #1: Reutimann backs up the qualifying run with a T10.
Story #2: Ambrose (in his own car) finishes ahead of Speed (in Vicker's car) and wraps up position 35 in the owner points.
(yeah, that's six picks. I forgot to score the last couple of races, and I'm way behind Mike anyway, so I don't figure it matters)

Winner: Cousin Carl. I got a feeling he will either bring home a trophy or the steering wheel.
1. DEJr outside the top 20. Not one of his better tracks.
2. David Ragan adds another top 10 to his resume
3. David Reutimann brings a smile to Mikey's face with a top 10 finish.
4. Marcos Ambrose brings the Little Debbie car in for a top-15 finish.
5. No more than 5 Chasers in the top 12
Segment one total - +14 Segment two total - +11 Chase points going in - +13 Race total - + Chase Points to Date - +

Jimmie Johnson now has to finish 36th or higher at Homestead to have the championship sown up, Matt Kenseth played payback and caused a big one on the last lap, and a rain delay in Arizona..... typical day at the races.
Winner: Mark Martin...... +0 Not this time. He finishes 14th
1. Ryan Newman scores a top 10... I wanted to call him, the winner, but I just don't have the confidence in him any more.... +0 Early pit strategy got him up front, but then a flat tire put him a lap down and it was downhill from there.
2. David Reuytimann might win but he will definitely finish in the top 10. +0 Ran well early, but just kept slipping back....
3. David Ragan sorta sucked in Happy Hour, but he qualified well. He will get it squared away and finish with a solid top 15. +1 Finished 10th. He is really starting to show his stuff.
4. Kyle Petty is back in the 45, but it won't help. Both Petty cars (43 and 45) will finish outside the top 30. +0 Bobby recovered well from practice and qualifying.
5. No more than 5 chasers in the top 12. +0 Looks like 9 made it this week.
