| Tires again Rory911 01:04:14 |
| | Put 4 new S03's on a 964 about 6K miles back. The rears were completely shot after 5.5K. So I looked around for tires that might give me a few more miles than 5-6K.
Kept the two fronts (they were still in good shape) and put 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's on. Unfortunately, the GS-D3's were not stable. I was told they needed 25 mile in order to break them in. But still after 25, not much improvement.
I put the old 2 front S03's back on and immediately there was an improvement. Finally, put 2 new rear S03's on and it was back normal. Of course, I got a refund for the GS-D3's.
BUT I'm still going to face the same problem 5K miles from now. So anyone had better experience with tires for a 964? It's a cab, not a turbo.
Looking for better mileage, but they still need to stick to the ground as well as the S03's.

Any suggestions about getting this done or a company that you can> purchase this type of thing?> Thanks. 1) Buy new "Carrera S" emblem from Porsche dealer 2) Ask their body shop to paint it the gold color on the Porsche crest 3) Swap badges on the rear of the car--have the dealer do it if you don't know how
You'll probably never find a company that advertises this specific service. Just do it yourself.

| Power steering leak Scott Phillips 18:15:43 |
| | 1990 944 Cabriolet (S2)
Right now I'm leaking power steering fluid. I crawled under the car and found that it looked to be leaking from the bar in front that moves the tires (not sure what this is called; it has a rubber boot on each side of it. When I pull back the boot on the right side, a whole bunch of oil comes out).
Since I don't do suspensions, I asked my mechanic about it. He said that it's a small leak, so it can wait until it's time to put the car to bed for the winter (I was going to get a few things fixed at this point anyway).
Then he said something interesting: This is a common problem, and many people will merely disconnect the belt to the power steering pump and drive the car with manual steering.
Has anyone ever heard of this? Is this normal or advised (at least until it can be properly fixed in November)?
Cya. Scott.

| porsche 944 oil leak Guest 10:55:41 |
| | hi every one i just got a 86 porsche 944 turbo the car is in great shape in and out. but there is one thing wrong with it. the guy that sold it too me told me it did have a oil leak in the oil pan gasket. so i took it to to a place that only works on porsche's (euroworks) in matthews n.c.. and to replace the oil pan gasket it would be $1.495.00 dollars. he said it would take 14 hours to do. it seems to be alot for just a oil pan gasket. if someone has had this problem befour please let me know if there is a easyer way to fix it. thank all of you so much

| 944 charging problem. Mr. Crash Davis 10:12:20 |
| | 1990 Porsche 944 cabriolet
I've been trying to track down this problem for a while. I have a radar detector that also outputs battery charge (not an exact reading, I know!). The trend in battery output has been decidedly down, to the point where the low volt warning sporatically comes on the car temporarily loses power for a few seconds.
Things I have tried: 1. Had the battery recharged at the auto parts store. 2. Replaced the alternator. 3. Disconnected a faulty digital gauge the previous owner had put in. 4. Tightened down a loose bolt connecting the ground strap from the battery (it had some yellow corrosion on it). 5. Checked and cleaned battery terminals.
Right now when running, a voltimeter reading at the battery says 13.5 (no accessories) and 12.9 (AC full blast, headlights on). These readings seem low to me (I've read that the reading should be around 13.8 or more).
I've been told that there is a ground from the engine to the transmission, but I don't see anything like that under the car. Someone also mentioned insulation flaking off and causing grounding problems. Didn't see anything like that though.
What else should I check?
Thanks folks.

| Burned out cooling fan. Possible short in wire? Mr. Crash Davis 00:59:11 |
| | Hey folks. I'm continuing my quest to stomp out electrical problems from my 944. (1990 944 S2)
So here's the deal: Driver's side fan is working fine (it comes on as soon as the car is started, but that's another issue). The other fan does not come on at all (not for cooling, A/C, etc). It didn't take me long to find out why. Upon crawling under the car, I saw that the rubber boot surrounding the connector for the second fan as well as the white plastic connector were partially melted.
Diagnostics with a voltimeter revealed that the second fan is burned out (no circuit completed). The cable that connects to the second fan tested fine (.502 reading versus .540 for the driver's side lead). The cable looks like a$$, but it's still passing current. So I guess the fuse for the second fan is good as well, right?
Naturally I'm going to have to replace that fan. Do I need to replace the wire too? Any idea what would cause the fan to short out like that?

| Oops - rounded off 'SC driveshaft allen bolts Jeff Dyer 22:35:14 |
| | I'm not sure whether I did it or whether it's a reused bolt but I've rounded off 1 of the 6 driveshaft bolts at the inner end (the first 5 all came off OK). I'm considering either taking it to a garage to see it they can tack weld a bolt onto the allen head and remove it that way.
Alternatively I could get a new set of bolts, grind off the reluctant head to allow access to the thread (pulling the flanges apart to get a disk cutter in) and cut the bolt thread off as close to the gearbox flange as possible then drill the remainder out.
This can't be the first time anyones messed this job up - any thoughts?

The car will be garage kept most of the time but may be outside periodically.

| Looking for audio upgrades --- 993 with audio package Mat 05:59:33 |
| |
Spoken to some folks with knowledge ... still don't have my hands on an answer:
Want to upgrade my audio system in a 993 with audio package (not digital package -- just the extra speakers and the Nokia amplifier).
Want something with either an MP3 player input --- of the ability to play MP3 disks.
Want something that matches the interior (no wild flashing lights please).
And finally --- would prefer plug and play --- no big hassles on wiring so I can undue if required.
I know that the new Euro-spec Beckers have all of the above --- but have been told that they lack ability to tune US AM radio stations.
Advice by anybody who has 'been there' is appreciated.
MAT.

| Koni struts Sjpatejak@Yahoo.Com 01:43:34 |
| | I need to replace my front struts. As an alternative to just replacing the front units, I've come across the idea of cutting off the shock absorber part of the strut and replacing it with a Koni insert. This sides a bit strange to me, but Koni is a reputable brand and the conversion is considerably cheaper than just replacing the struts. Does anyone have any experience with this conversion? How reliable is it?

| Radiator rubber blocks--which where? Cdwin 00:06:32 |
| | Just replaced the thermostat in my '88 924S. Decided to back flush the radiator since I was close. When I pulled the radiator all four of the rubber mounting blocks came out. There are two different thicknesses. Which goes up top, and which is at the bottom? Thanks, Craig
BTW the thermostat was broken at the top of the brass bridge that holds the spring shaft. There's a little pressed-in bushing. The thing broke on either side of that. Don't know where the bushing went. That was another incentive to flush the radiator.

| 1984 944 will not start Mjones 23:33:52 |
| | A week ago i changed the battery out. It ran that day and the next. The following day it did not start. it seems to want to start, for about a second it runs and then dies. The longer I wait to start it again the longer it runs, i think 2 seconds is the longest so far. It cranks, it has spark at all the plugs. I replaced the DME relay. I can hear the fuel pump on the tank making a noise when it is cranked and the fuel pump under the tank makes noise when i start the car. All the fuses look good. My gut tells me this is a fuel issue. I hate to keep changing out parts until it works. I have no clue, any suggestions would be great.

| clutch question. need advice asap Tod 10:49:22 |
| | Well... I have a 86 944 n/a
The first thing is the clutch was clunking and I know that I need a new clutch as the rubber is probably non existant.
Now.... the new issue. I poped the clutch and now it just clicks in any gear. I hope that I have not totally destroyed the whole thing.
I want to replaced the clutch plate on sunday but am I heading down a bad road? I only have Saturday night and Sunday to do the job and want to drive the car on Monday. I think that I can do the job but my question is, "what did I do to my Baby".
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Signed A very sad man.
Tod
