volvo 850 stalls Px 14:39:07
We have a 1993 Volvo 850 that once every two weeks or so... just stalls.
It happens at any time..... but usually when we are driving it... with
foot on throttle. After stalling, all dash lights are on... and the car
restarts everytime. The fuel pump in the tank was recently replaced but did
not fix the problem.
Any ideas?

Much thanks in advance!!

My 96' 960 (130k) had the same problem. A code reader was used to
find..I had 2 coils (cracks) out and a leaky intake manifold. The coils
were easy to replace. The intake was fairly easy too. I left all of the
"sleeves" on and pulled the manifold back as far as it would go (about
1-2") cleaned the block as best I could, "slid" the new gasket in place
and she ran like new again. If you do the intake mani yourself make
sure you use a few extentions with a swivel and a socket.

S40 Drivers SIPS Airbag problem Steve Bernth 20:10:28
The air bag light on my 2000 S40 has come on twice in the last 3 years.
Both times the fault was the connector under the drivers seat for the SIPS
airbag had been damaged. The dealer was able to "repair" the connector both
times, but said this most recent time that if it comes on again I will need
a new SIPS air bag. I asked the service dept. what the problem seems to be
and they said that the connector is getting "crunched" when we move the
power seat back and forth (I'm 5'11 and my wife is 5'1"). When I asked them
what we could do to keep this from happening again they said to "be more
careful when you move the seat". I asked them how you "carefully" move a
power seat and they just kind of looked at me as that suggestion obviously
makes no sense. Anyone else have similar problems or suggestions????

Done the swap a while ago; I can't get the lighting in the new, little
clock to be bright enough, my attempts so far have consisted of
replacing the bulb in the clock with new ones a couple of times. It
lights, but it's like the location of the bulb vs. the glass is such as
to not illuminate it as intensely as the real instrument cluster. Any
ideas?

Speedometer freaking out - Odometer not working at all Guest 17:26:00
 What is going on?

I have a 1987 Volvo 240 wagon. And I love it. But, the car's got some
issues that are starting to p*ss me off.

My speedometer works in the morning, just fine. I drive it to work, and
in the afternoon when I drive home - nothing. It doesn't move. Then,
after driving for about 15-30 minutes, it will bounce up to whatever
speed i'm going. It's scary.

My Odometer has not been working at all.

Can this be fixed (easily and affodably)? Could I do it myself?

Help, please.

I'd like to know how fast I'm driving. The odometer's not AS important,
but I'm guessing since they failed at the same time, the problem might
be related.

Cheers.

My guess is that there is no outside temp sensor - normally extra in
connection with
heater controlled fan function oly in the hot summerdays.

The fan should start regardless of outside temp.

That's always a good first guess, not just in volvos. i don't care
whether it's an idle air control valve or an idle speed adjust bypass
or an idle speed adjust motor or a choke in a carburetor, it'll get
gummy/sticky. Last time I suspected the idle speed adjust bypass was
making my Honda gallop at idle but decided to let the professionals
diagnose it, I ended up buying a rebuilt distributor before they
figured out it was the idle speed adjust bypass.

My 960 is having heat stoke or some such thing Damien 21:00:33
Well folks it is time to move on to my 960. Now I live in Brisbane Australia
and it is a hot dry summer here at the moment. The days are usually in the
mid 30's deg C.

The problem is when I leave the car in the heat of the day and drive the car
at say 11 am, the windows and the blinkers don't work. If I drive it for
awhile then stop and restart the car they work.

Any idea which bit is getting affected by the heat?

Thanks for your help

850 head gaskets Guest 18:46:33
 Hi Folks...

I'm a professional truck mechanic and, consequently, have done all the
repair and maintenance on my '87 240 wagon since new. It appears that
my wife's '93 850GLT has developed a head gasket leak. Unlike the 240
which I do in an afternoon with a couple of beers this one appears
slightly more complicated.

Questions: Is this engine more prone to cylinder head problems like
warping, cracking, etc. that would increase the cost beyond rational?
Are there any hidden gizmos requiring special tools not ordinarily
found in a reasonably complete tool box? Mitchell gives me about 9 hrs
for the job, is that reasonable?

Regards

Pat Hayes

Re: 88 240 rear end vibration Cton 17:00:39
Thanks for your responses. The torque rod bushings were actually
changed last fall but none of the other rear end suspension bushings
were changed. I'm not sure what rpm's the engine is at when this noise
is present (no tach), but it seems to the worst at around 80 km/h. The
noise quiets down when I get up to 110-120 km/h, but it could also be
masked by the wind noise (which is much louder at that speed!). I will
be on the highway later this week and will double check this. Plus, I
will definitely also check the diff oil levels to make sure those are
good (I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything is ok in the
differential!).

Anyone suggestions where I need to look? I don't want to drill it...

All the wiring goes through the fusebox. You can run your wire in the
bottom of the fusebox where all the other wire go in, then in through
the firewall that way.

Re: Looking for a new 2007 wagon Robert 07:48:23
Well, since AWD isn't too important to you (it is for me in northern
Connecticut), I would look at either a V70R if you want speed, and
might I say looks, or just a plain V70.

I also hear that the new BMW 5-Series wagon is pretty nice too...I
haven't driven it yet myself but you might want to take a look at it
depending on your price range...

Re: V/S 70 reliability VS 850 Guest 04:32:01
Impressive history lesson, Stephen. I for one thank you for it.
However, as a past, present and hopefully future Volvo owner I'd like
to hear your 101 lesson expand to S80's, what is your take on that
model? I actually intend to purchase one, I like it a lot but don't
know how well they stand in the Volvo lineup (with other models). I
know I should avoid the 99 model (S80's that is) but any words of
wisdom beyond that?
Thanks
